Originally from Rochester, New York, Paulsen began playing the bass at age 13. He earned his Undergraduate degree at the Manhattan School of Music where he studied with Metropolitan Opera Principal Bass, Timothy Cobb. After completing his degree he moved to London, England as a scholarship student at the Royal College of Music. While in London he worked closely with longtime inspiration Thomas Martin, former Principal Bass of the London Symphony Orchestra. Upon returning to the States, Paulsen moved to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and earned a Masters degree at Carnegie Mellon University with Pittsburgh Symphony Principal Bassist, Jeffrey Turner.

Also an active electric bassist, Paulsen has recorded several albums with a Rochester, New York based technical metal band. Having a keen interest in many musical genres, he also enjoys playing many other styles. On the side, he enjoys the arts, food and drink, and is an amateur home-brewer.
