A Houston native, Quillen has performed in the Houston Symphony bass section and has had the privilege of working with conductors Andris Nelsons, Christoph von Dohnányiand Ludovic Morlot. He has participated in the Texas Music Festival and the Wabass Institute for the 21st Century Bass Player, where he worked with Philadelphia Orchestra Principal Bassist Harold Robinson. Quillen was a fellow at the Tanglewood Music Center in the summer of 2015, where he worked side-by-side with members of the Boston Symphony Orchestra. Recently, he also was a Zubin Mehta Fellow as part of the New York Philharmonic Global Academy. Quillen began his studies with Houston Grand Opera Principal Bassist Dennis Whittaker and earned his bachelor’s degree from the New England Conservatory of Music, studying with Lawrence Wolfe of the Boston Symphony Orchestra and Donald Palma of the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra. Quillen recently earned his master’s degree from the Shepherd School of Music at Rice University, where he studied with esteemed pedagogue Paul Ellison.
