First Violin

Rachel Sandman

Los Angeles native Rachel Sandman moved to Kansas City to join the symphony in 2018. She previously completed two seasons with the New World Symphony in Miami Beach, Florida, where highlights included leading the symphony in Rimsky-Korsakov’s Capriccio Espagnole and Mahler’s 9th symphony under the baton of Michael Tilson Thomas. Rachel is a former associate concertmaster of the Canton Symphony, a former member of ProMusic Chamber Orchestra and Breckenridge Music Festival Orchestra, and has performed with the Cleveland Orchestra. She has collaborated in chamber music performances with Jinjoo Cho, Larry Dutton, Sharon Robinson, Ettore Causa, and members of the Ariel and Cavani string quartets.

Rachel received her bachelor’s degree from Rice University where she studied with Sergiu Luca and Cho-Liang Lin. She holds Master’s degrees in violin and Suzuki pedagogy as well as an Artist Diploma from the Cleveland Institute of Music, where she studied with Joel Smirnoff, Ivan Zenaty, Kimberly Meier-Sims, and William Preucil.

Rachel lives in Hyde Park with her husband, fellow KCS violinist Stirling Trent, and their dogs, Tyler and Rocky. She teaches privately and at the Kansas City Suzuki Academy in Overland Park. In her spare time, she enjoys staying active, crafting, cooking, and developing her green thumb.
