Patron Code of Conuct

Our Commitment
The Kansas City Symphony is committed to providing a safe, welcoming and enjoyable experience for all patrons, artists, staff and volunteers. This Code of Conduct establishes expectations for behavior to ensure everyone can fully enjoy their performances in a respectful and inclusive environment. 

Respectful Behavior
All patrons are expected to: 

  • Treat fellow patrons, artists, staff and volunteers with courtesy, dignity and respect 
  • Refrain from behavior that disrupts or interferes with the performance or others’ enjoyment 
  • Follow instructions from staff, ushers and security personnel 
  • Respect personal space and boundaries of others 

Prohibited Conduct
The following behaviors are not permitted and may result in removal from the venue without refund: 

  • Verbal or physical harassment, including abusive language, gestures or threats  
  • Discrimination, bullying or harassment based on race, color, religion, national origin, age, disability, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation or any other protected characteristic  
  • Disorderly, disruptive or intoxicated behavior that affects other patrons’ experience or creates an unsafe environment 
  • Conduct that threatens the safety of others 
  • Use of obscene, offensive or threatening language or gestures 
  • Intentionally blocking the view of other patrons 
  • Vandalism, damage or destruction of property 
  • Any illegal activity or violation of federal, state or local laws 
  • Accessing or attempting to access restricted areas (backstage, stage, administrative areas) without administration 
  • Refusing to comply with staff instructions or interfering with staff performance of duties 

Performance Etiquette
To preserve the concert experience for all: 

  • Arrive on time; latecomers may be seated at the discretion of house management during appropriate breaks to minimize disruption  
  • Turn off or silence all electronic devices to emit light (cell phones, smartwatches, cameras, tablets) before entering the performance 
  • Refrain from talking, whispering or making unnecessary noise during the performance 
  • Flash photography, video recording and audio recording during the performance are strictly prohibited 
  • Food and beverages are not permitted in the performance 
  • Applause is traditionally reserved for the end of complete works; the conductor will signal appropriate times to applaud by turning to face the audience  

Children and Family Attendance 

  • All attendees, regardless of age, must have a ticket 
  • Children ages 8 and older are welcome to attend Symphony concerts 
  • Family Concert performances, including the Christmas Festival, are specifically designed and recommended for children and families 
  • Parents and guardians are responsible for ensuring children’s behavior does not disrupt the performance or disturb other patrons 

Substance Policy 

  • The venue reserves the right to determine, in its reasonable judgement, whether any conduct, odor, smoke, or vapor unreasonably interferes with the comfort, safety, or enjoyment of other guests 
  • Patrons must consume alcoholic beverages responsibly 
  • Patrons appearing intoxicated will be denied entry or be subject to removal from the venue 

Accessibility 

  • The Kansas City Symphony is committed to providing accessible services for all patrons 
  • Accessible seating, assistive listening devices and other accommodations are available  
  • Please contact the Box Office at 816.471.0400 in advance to arrange accommodations 

Reporting Concerns
If you witness or experience any violation of this Code of Conduct, or if you feel uncomfortable or unsafe: 

  • Immediately report the incident to the nearest usher, security personnel or house management representative 
  • All reports will be taken seriously and addressed promptly and professionally 
  • The Kansas City Symphony will protect the confidentiality of those reporting concerns to the extent possible 

Consequences
Violations of this Code of Conduct may result in: 

  • Verbal or written warning from staff or house management  
  • Immediate removal from the venue without refund 
  • Suspension or revocation of ticket privileges for future events 
  • Notification of law enforcement 

Acknowledgment
By purchasing a ticket or entering Kansas City Symphony venues, you agree to abide by this Patron Code of Conduct. The Kansas City Symphony reserves the right to refuse entry or remove any patron who violates this Code of Conduct.

Educational Programming Etiquette 

  • All attendees, regardless of age, must have a ticket 
  • Parents, guardians, teachers and/or chaperones are responsible for ensuring children’s behavior does not disrupt the performance or disturb other patrons 
  • Patrons supervising children shall work to encourage positive and appropriate student behavior throughout the concert.
