Todd Lockwood, Double Bass

Before joining the Kansas City Symphony in 2011 Todd Lockwood spent two years as a member of the Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra. Prior to living in Florida Mr. Lockwood was principal double bassist of the Chattanooga Symphony and Opera. While in Tennessee he also served as instructor of double bass at the University of Tennessee, Chattanooga. He also held a one-year position with the Colorado Symphony Orchestra, as well as performed with the Indianapolis Symphony. Mr. Lockwood began studying the bass in the Colorado public school system at age nine. He later studied privately with Robin Olschner. He earned a Bachelor of Music, with highest honors, under Paul Erhard at the University of Colorado, and completed a Master of Music and a Performer Diploma, under Bruce Bransby at Indiana University. He remains active as a music educator, maintaining a private studio and working with several youth orchestras throughout the country. Mr. Lockwood spends summers performing with the Cabrillo Contemporary Music Festival, under the direction of Marin Alsop. He performs on a 19th century French bass, previously owned by Kenneth Harper.

Ten questions about me:

What is your favorite thing about performing music?

My favorite thing about performing music is the challenge of executing the music as perfectly as possible in front of a live audience.

What is your most inspiring composer?

The composers that inspire me are the composers alive today. Composers who continue the traditions set by the great composers of the past while adding new ideas and innovations. Working alongside a living composer also allows the musician to be part of the creative process, which can be very enjoyable.

Tell us about your family and your hobbies.

In my free time I enjoy camping, off-roading, and fly-fishing with my wife Shannon, who is pursuing a doctorate from the University of Cincinnati and is currently instructor of cello at Jacksonville University. I also play tennis and enjoy working on my jeep.

Any pizza is a good pizza, but I particularly like a pizza I ate through college with alfredo sauce, oven-roasted red potatoes, garlic, dill, and topped off with bacon, cheddar, and gorgonzola cheese.
