Porter Wyatt Henderson, Associate Principal Trombone
Porter Wyatt Henderson is currently serving as associate principal trombone of the Kansas City Symphony, principal trombone of the Crested Butte Music Festival, and a member of the Kansas City Brass. He is a former member of the Grand Rapids Symphony and the Civic Orchestra of Chicago. He also has performed with the Chicago Symphony, Dallas Symphony, Aspen Festival Orchestra, Great Music West, Sunflower Music Festival, and as a fellow at the Tanglewood Music Center. Henderson received his bachelor's degree from the University of North Texas and his master's degree from Northwestern University. His teachers include Leon Brown, John Kitzman, Per Brevig, Edward Kleinhammer, Frank Crisafulli and Arnold Jacobs. He is currently adjunct instructor of low brass at MidAmerica Nazarene University, and he formerly taught at Baker University.

What is your earliest musical memory?
Listening to my parents' record collection - from bluegrass to country to classical to Big Band.
How did you choose your instrument?
Hey, the sixth grade band at Woodrow Wilson Elementary needed trombones!
Other than your Kansas City Symphony concerts, where else can audiences catch you performing in town?
Many performances throughout the area with the Kansas City Brass
What is your most memorable performance with the Kansas City Symphony?
Playing Bruckner Symphony No. 4 with Skrowaczewski. Also, playing with Lyle Lovett in the Flint Hills in June 2010.
Tell us about your family and your hobbies.
My family consists of me, my wife Karen (a high school math teacher), my daughter Elise and son Elijah. My main activity outside of music is the martial art of Aikido. I train and teach at the Midland Ki Society in Merriam; I currently hold the rank of Sandan (3rd degree black belt). I also enjoy hiking, and wildlife watching in the Rocky Mountains.

What do you consider to be your greatest accomplishment?
Being employed as a trombone player!
